Decarbo’Solution® Certified Experts: Hands-on expertise to help companies reduce their carbon footprint
Many consultants and experts want to develop expertise in “carbon footprint calculation” so they can provide their clients with the necessary carbon strategy advice. This expertise is, in fact, increasingly in demand among companies and local governments seeking to measure and reduce their CO2 emissions, driven by new regulatory requirements and the direct and indirect benefits of this commitment.
A carbon assessment provides an overview of an organization’s carbon footprint. By quantifying all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—whether directly or indirectly generated—it enables the implementation of action plans to reduce them as much as possible.
Mandatory for companies with more than 50 employees that are benefiting from the economic recovery plan (2021 Finance Act, Art. 244), for those with more than 500 employees, or 250 employees in the overseas departments, as well as for local governments with more than 50,000 residents (Grenelle II Act, July 12, 2010), it is also a decision with economic, commercial, and environmentally responsible impacts that are widely appreciated by all types of businesses.
More and more companies are deciding on their own to conduct a carbon assessment for a variety of reasons, including, in particular, the resulting ease of managing their carbon trajectory.
Is it complicated to conduct a comprehensive assessment?
An emissions inventory is essentially a comprehensive compilation of a company’s emission sources. It is broken down into three categoriesthat classify a company’s greenhouse gas emissions by source or by type of activity.
- Scope 1: so-called direct emissions: emissions from fixed or mobile facilities located within the organizational boundary
- Scope 2: Indirect energy-related emissions: emissions associated with the production of electricity, heat, steam, or cooling
- Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions
Including all three scopes in a GHG inventory provides a comprehensive overview of an organization's emissions.
Once the assessment has been completed, it is necessary to reduce the reported emissions and establish a low-carbon pathway.
The concept of “Bilan Carbone”—which is, in fact, merely a registered trademark in France—has always been difficult to grasp. Was this intentional, to justify the involvement of experts?
