Ecowatt: How Does It Work, and Why Should You Care?
Thanks to Ecowatt, everyone can take action. The tool displays signals (green, orange, or red) depending on the situation. If an orange or red Ecowatt alert is issued, simple steps can help prevent the worst from happening: turn off unnecessary electrical appliances, delay using fans, turn down the heat… These actions help prevent a power outage and promote energy savings.
Understanding Ecowatt means you can better manage your electricity consumption, reduce your bill and avoid blackouts. It's also a way for you to make your own contribution to a more stable energy system in France. In this article, we explain how it works, and why it's worth taking an interest. What is Ecowatt?
🔌 An initiative launched by RTE, EDF, and ADEME
Ecowattis a free service launched byRTE(Réseau de Transport d’Électricité), with support fromADEMEandEDF. Its goal is to prevent strain on the French power grid by providing citizens and businesses with real-time information on electricity consumption levels. This service helps users manage their energy consumption more effectively while minimizing risks to the grid.
This system works like a "electricity weather forecastby indicating periods when energy production may not be sufficient to cover consumption. In this way, everyone can adapt their usage to avoid power cuts. Energy flow management is essential to ensure stable delivery.
⚡ A tool for monitoring electricity usage
In France, energy consumption is particularly high in the winter, mainly due to electric heating. For example, on January 23, 2023, a peak consumption of84 GWwas recorded during a cold snap.
Ecowatt tracks these variations in real time, by comparing electricity production (nuclear, wind, solar, etc.) with demand. When consumption approaches production limits, the system issues alerts to encourage reduced electricity consumption. Among the options on offer, delaying non-essential uses can make all the difference.
🟢🟧🟥 A simple, visual signaling system
The system uses a color-coding system to indicate the status of the power grid:
-
- 🟢 Green: The situation is normal; no specific action is required.
- 🟧 Orange: The network is under strain; it is recommended that you reduce your usage.
- 🟥 Red: The risk of power outages is high; immediate action is needed.
These alerts are distributed viathe Ecowatt app and the dedicated website, and registered users can receive them via text message or email.
For example, during the winter of 2022–2023, thanks to a collective effort and reduced energy consumption, France avoided 12 red alerts that could have led to power outages.
How does the Ecowatt system work?
How to ensure the long-term viability and growth of your business through a successful low-carbon strategy.
🧠 A real-time forecasting and alert system
Ecowatt is a tool developed by RTE, with support from ADEME and EDF. Its purpose is to ensure a constant balance between electricity generation and consumption in France. This eco-friendly system provides a clear picture of the voltage level on the grid.
Specifically, RTE collects and analyzes data from the national power grid. The system anticipates potential strain on the grid and, if necessary, issues alerts up to three days in advance. These alerts help prevent scheduled power outages by encouraging the French public to adjust their consumption patterns and adopt energy-saving measures at the right time. A clear signal helps people make the right decisions without compromising their comfort.
👉 In winter, this reduces demand at peak times, often between 7am-11am and 6pm-8pm. Turning off unnecessary fans or postponing certain uses can lower energy prices for everyone.
📱 Simple and accessible digital tools
The Ecowatt system is available to everyone through several platforms:
- The official page: www.monecowatt.fr
- The Ecowatt mobile app, available for free on Android and iOS
- SMS or email notifications for registered users
These tools provide live information on the state of the power grid, and give advance warning of critical periods. The aim is to give everyone the power to act at the right time.
🔄 Concrete steps to relieve pressure on the network
In the event of an orange or red alert, everyone can help stabilize the power grid. Here are a few simple and effective steps recommended by RTE:
- Schedule the use of the washing machine, oven, or fans outside of peak hours
- Lower the thermostat by 1°C (which can reduce your bill by 7%)
- Turn off electrical appliances that are in standby mode or not in use
- Opt for faster cooking methods (microwave instead of electric oven)

🌍 A Collective Challenge for the Energy Transition
Electricity demand in France varies greatly depending on the season, the time of day, and the weather. In winter, demand can skyrocket due to electric heating. Faced with these spikes, the grid becomes vulnerable.
Reducing your electricity demand at the right time means:
- to avoid power outages,
- limit the use of highly polluting energy sources (such as gas- or coal-fired power plants),
- take action to create a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
It’s also a simple way to lower electricity prices: when everyone uses electricity at the same time, energy prices on the markets skyrocket. In 2022, the price per MWh exceeded €1,000 during periods of extreme peak demand.
By giving clear signals (green, orange, red), Ecowatt enables everyone to become a player in the energy transition, while saving money at the same time.
🏢 Businesses are also affected
Businesses play a key role. They consume a lot of energy, often at peak times. By following Ecowatt’s guidance and adopting simple energy-saving practices, they can:
-
- anticipate critical periods,
- protect their business from potential outages,
- improve their carbon footprint.
For example: switching off non-essential electrical equipment in the evening or outside opening hours, smoothing out energy-intensive use, avoiding excessive heating or air-conditioning...
