Carbon footprint, GHG footprint: What are we really talking about?
The term“carbon footprint” is commonly used in everyday language, but it is actually a misnomer. Bilan Carbone® is a trademark registered by ADEME, referring to a specific carbon accounting methodology. The correct generic term is GHG inventory (greenhouse gas emissions inventory), which encompasses the measurement of direct emissions (Scope 1), energy-related emissions (Scope 2), and indirect emissions from the value chain (Scope 3). At Decarbo’Solution®, we conduct your comprehensive GHG inventory in accordance with current standards (ADEME’s Bilan Carbone® method, the GHG Protocol, and ISO 14064) to lay the groundwork for an effective and compliant decarbonization strategy.
What is the difference between a carbon footprint and a regulatory GHG inventory?
The regulatory GHG inventory (BEGES) is a legal requirement for companies with more than 500 employees in France (250 in overseas territories) and local governments with more than 50,000 residents. It focuses on Scopes 1 and 2, with Scope 3 now also mandatory. The carbon footprint assessment, as defined by ADEME’s Bilan Carbone® method, goes a step further by systematically including all indirect emissions. Which companies are required to conduct a GHG assessment?
Since the Grenelle II Act and its subsequent amendments, any company with more than 500 employees must publish its GHG emissions report every four years, along with a transition plan. With the CSRD directive, the scope is expanding: companies with more than 250 employees or exceeding certain revenue thresholds will also be required to prepare a comprehensive carbon footprint report. Beyond the legal requirement, the GHG inventory serves as a strategic tool for anticipating regulatory changes and highlighting a company’s CSR initiatives.
How long does it take to conduct a carbon assessment using Decarbo'Solution®?
The time required depends on the size of your organization and the availability of data. On average, a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) takes 4 to 8 weeks to complete using Decarbo’Solution®. What is a low-carbon pathway, and how can it be defined?
A low-carbon trajectory is a quantified roadmap that defines your company’s short-, medium-, and long-term GHG emission reduction targets. It is based on the results of your carbon footprint assessment and aligns with scientific frameworks (SBTi, SNBC). Decarbo’Solution® includes a dedicated module that allows you to model different decarbonization scenarios, prioritize high-impact actions, and track your progress year after year.
