Carbon footprint assessments are becoming essential for experts

🎬 Interview with Bruno Carlier, President of Mercuroo

Could you please introduce yourself and describe your business?

My name is Bruno Carlier, and I am the President of Mercuroo. Mercuroo is a business consulting firm specializing in export services for companies and organizations in the “smart, sustainable, and environmentally friendly cities” sector.

Why are you interested in carbon footprints?

Out of respect for future generations, I feel it is my duty tocontribute to the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming. To that end, the first step is indeed tomeasure one’s carbon footprint in order to understand and implement strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Why did you choose the GCI platform?

For four reasons. The first is that I was looking for astandalone solution that would be fully operational 24 hours a day.

The second reason is that I was looking fora cost-effective solution for my small business. The third reason is that, since I do a lot of exporting, I needed to prepare carbon footprint reports for my clients in English. The GCI platform’s international reach makes this possible. And finally, the fourth reason, of course, isthe user-friendly design, online help, and collaborative features offered by the GCI tool, which are very appealing.

Do you help companies develop their carbon strategies?

Not only companies, but also certain local governments—primarily on an international level. Many companies that respond to public or private international bids are required by their clients to provide a carbon footprint assessment. These companies have never had one—and certainly not in English. I help them prepare their carbon footprint assessment in English, and oncethey have it, they can respond to the bids, sincefailing to provide this assessment is a deal-breaker.

What would you say to an entrepreneur to encourage them to calculate their company’s carbon footprint?

I’ll say exactly what happened to me. That is, I wanted to submit a bid for a public contract but couldn’t because I hadn’t conducted my carbon assessment. That was a mandatory requirement for submitting a bid—that’s the first thing. Second, there will be more and more requests from contractors and clients of these companies to conduct these carbon assessments. So it’s a necessity. Thenthere’s a legal requirement that will become increasingly common.Conducting a carbon assessment means preparing for future carbon taxation. The most important thing—as is the case for my company—is that conducting carbon assessments means asking the right questions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which will ultimately have a positive impact on the company’s bottom line.
