Project Details
The Mud Road Sanitary Landfill in Fulton County covers 263 hectares in the city of Johnstown. The active site covers 12 hectares, with an additional 3.4-hectare expansion area set aside for potential future waste. This project initially occupied two 4.4-hectare parcels, supplemented by a 2-hectare parcel, a second expansion consisting of two 3.6-hectare parcels, and finally a third expansion consisting of three 5.5-hectare parcels. In 2009, the landfill covered 3.4 hectares of the first parcel.
In 2007, in order to produce enough landfill gas of satisfactory quality to subsequently sell it to a landfill gas-to-energy plant, major work was undertaken to modernize and expand the landfill gas collection system. The county’s energy partner, IES, began construction of the facility dedicated to converting landfill gas into energy in July 2009 and began operating it in June 2010.
The landfill gas energy recovery plant burns all collected landfill gas. As a result, the project leads to a reduction in emissions of 365,720 tCO2e over the selected 10-year crediting period, with an average annual reduction in emissions of 36,572 tCO2e.

The Benefits of the Project
Achieve reductions in GHG emissions by capturing and destroying landfill methane, which converts the methane into carbon dioxide and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere.
Creation of local jobs during the construction and operation phases.
Contribution to the development of waste management technology.
Reduction of odor nuisance and the risk of fire and explosion.
